By Pham Xanh
The book explores the historical events connected with Hồ Chí Minh’s activities between 1911 and 1946. In 1911, Hồ Chí Minh left Việt Nam and started travelling overseas to seek ways to liberate the country from the domination of French colonialists. In the following years he prepared intensively the necessary conditions for the founding of the Communist Party of Việt Nam, which took place in 1930. In the subsequent years he led the Vietnamese revolution from victory to victory, notably at the time of the August Revolution in 1945.Analyzing Hồ Chí Minh’s diverse and abundant activities, the author of this book reveals the process through which Hồ Chí Minh Thought, as a complete ideological system, within the context of the time and conditions in Việt Nam during that period.

After the victory of the August Revolution in September 1945, the newly established Democratic Republic of Viet Nam faced numerous challenges including famine, illiteracy, and internal and external enemies. Everything depended on the sound leadership of our Party, led by President Ho Chi Minh. His military and diplomatic excellence, political acumen, and belief in the national unity bloc and the power of justice helped the Party and government lead our people and army to build and strengthen the military, foreign affairs, economic, finance, culture, education and transportation systems of the new state. Simultaneously, they were fighting a long, all-out, all-people war of resistance, forcing them to be self-reliant.

President Ho Chi Minh’s life and activities are closely linked to the historical development of the world and of his country from the early twentieth century to the last 1960s. He made great contributions to the Vietnamese revolution and important contributions to the communist and workers movement and the national liberation movements throughout the world.

President Hồ Chí Minh is the great leader of the Communist Party of Việt Nam (CPV) and the Vietnamese nation. He is also a great patriot, an outstanding soldier of the international communist movement, the workers’ movement and the national liberation movement. He embodies the quintessence of the Vietnamese nation and humankind. He embodies genuine patriotism and pure internationalism. Not only did he sacrifice his whole life for independence, freedom, and happiness of the Vietnamese people, but he also indefatigably struggled for solidarity and friendship between countries and nation in the world.
“There are few people who become a legend when they’re still alive, and obviously Hồ Chí Minh is one of them”. He is remembered by everyone not only because of his contribution in liberating the nation and citizens from domination but also because of his role as a modern philosopher who brought new far-sightedness and hope to those who were uncompromisingly fighting to eliminate unfairness and inequality in the world.
This is a biographical sketch of the work and revolutionary activities of President Hồ Chí Minh from his early days of leading the Vietnamese revolution until his death in 1969.

Even now, there are people who are still bewildered about how to characterize Hồ Chí Minh’s achievements. He is undoubtedly the greatest hero of Vietnamese national liberation, a great man of culture. But, shoud we consider him a thinker or a theorist? Some Western researchers believe that Hồ Chí Minh had no ambition to become a thinker or a theorist. They called him an “organizer” or a “realist activist”, although they qualified these terms by adjectives such as “great”, “talented”, “eminent”, etc.

Stories Told on the Trail, written under the pseudonym T. Lan, is Ho Chi Minh’s autobiography as he recounted it. This is an extremely rare work describing Ho Chi Minh’s secret revolutionary activities over a long period of time. The collected drafts (the first draft, which Ho Chi Minh wrote by hand; the second draft, which he typed and corrected by hand; and the third draft, which staff at the Presidential Office typed and which Ho Chi Minh corrected before sending it to the newspaper for printing) are currently archived in their complete form at the Ho Chi Minh Museum in Ha Noi, Viet Nam.
This photo book, “President Hồ Chí Minh and the capital of Hà Nội”, includes almost 200 photos arranged in chronological order. They show Uncle Ho undertaking various activities in the capital as well as the affection the people of Ha Noi had for him. Accompanying each photo are details such as Uncle Ho’s hearty compliments and close guidance to the people in matters of labor, production and fighting, which contributed to the construction of socialism and the struggle for national liberation.

Anyone whether the president of a state or a common person – will follow some basic routines of daily life that include activities such as eating, sleeping, dressing, traveling, working and communicating. The fashion in which he or she performs these activities – simply or fussily, politely or carelessly, extravagantly or thriftily, pretentiously or humbly – depends partly on his or her financial and social status, but is more decisevely determined by his or her foresight, mindset, and discipline.

Short, moving stories are told by those who worked closely with President Hồ Chí Minh. We read of Hồ Chí Minh’s drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1945, his participation in the border operation in 1950, and his contacts with peasants, young people and international friends. There’s an impressive story about how Hồ Chí Minh wrote his last will and testament. It helps readers understand the noble ideas and deeds of a head of state in the last days of his life. The appendix includes two versions of Việt Nam’s Independence Declaration, one of which was written by Hồ Chí Minh in 1945, and Hồ Chí Minh’s testament, completed in 1945. These documents are among Việt Nam’s national treasures.
These are reminiscences of Hồ Chí Minh (1890 – 1969) by his close assistants, collaborators and international friends.
